Q.1 (a)          Explain the disadvantages of SNMP protocol not inherently supporting transactions.
Q.1 (b)          If there were a need to support transactions in SNMP, explain how a network management system could achieve it, with an example.                                  [5 + 5 = 10]

Q.2 (a)          What is the need for auto-discovery of devices in a network management system?
Q.2 (b)          Describe any two approaches for performing auto-discovery of devices in a network management system. Outline the pros and cons of these approaches.                                                                                                                       [4 + 6 = 10]

Q.4.        Explain the applications of SNMP GET-NEXT operation.                                         [5]

Q.5.        A network operator wants to monitor the local network segments in his Ethernet LAN in a reliable manner, without increasing the traffic load. What would be his solution to achieving this? Justify how this solution is reliable and why there is no considerable increase in traffic load.                                                                                            [5]

Q.6.        Water heater and oven are two electrical appliances in a home that need to be managed. A PC is used for the management control. It shall be possible to read as well as set the temperatures of the oven and the heater. In addition it shall be possible to turn the heater as well as the oven on and off. Answer the questions below: (State any assumptions you are making).                                                                                             [5]

(a)    Identify two new managed object types required to support the above requirements.
(b)   Create an ASN.1 MIB definition for these object types.
